Here, Joe En-Huey readies his six meter glider for launching, while Ian lends a helping hand.

Joe's glider under power. The grass in the background looks awfully close, and in fact, it turned out to be too close.

West Wings' Sapphire, a duration rubber-powered model that I modified for electric power and radio control using the EMPS MM-1 (direct drive 3 volt) motor, lithium battery, 2 channel HiTec "shredder" receiver and two Canon ultralight servos. It flew well until I lost the orientation on the second flight,

and had this to look at for the next few years. Stay tuned.

The Sapphire flies again
After letting it sit around for about 5 years, I finally sat down and rebuilt the poor thing. So much has changed during these 5 years: new motors, receivers, servos. The whole thing weights about 6 oz. I use the new Astro 01 brushless motor (direct drive) and those fancy rechargeable lithium batteries from Tadiron (Israel). It's covered in Oracover lite (which has a slight yellow tint). The photo on the right is a closeup, showing the batteries and the receiver (JR 241: it's 1/2 oz as before, but this one is 4 channel and works on the usual model aircraft frequencies of 72 Mhz),

Here's my paraplane, which I finally sold to Nick (the president of our club). He fixed it up with a new motor and the new 1700 mah scrc Sanyo batteries. Flies better than it ever did while I owned it!
